Two Cabinet Secretaries who had been accused of campaigning for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga have vowed to continue politicking.

Speaking in Nzoia on Monday, November 8, Defence CS Eugene Wamalwa and his Agriculture counterpart, Peter Munya, revealed that they would not bow to the pressure from the Deputy President’s camp that has been castigating them over their political engagements.

Wamalwa, particularly defended his actions by noting that the Kenyan constitution had accorded all citizens political rights including Cabinet Secretaries.

“We don’t want threats from anyone. I am seeing a lot of intimidation towards CSs. There are those who have been attacking us that CSs have been politicking.

“For the first time in history, the Constitution of Kenyan provides political rights. Those political rights are guaranteed to every Kenyan including CSs and county ministers,” stated Wamalwa.

Corroborating Wamalwa’s statement, CS Munya noted that all CSs accused of politicking should not bow down to any intimidation tactics.

Addressing Interior CS Fred Matiang’i and his ICT counterpart Joe Mucheru, the Agriculture CS advised them to be steadfast in their actions.

“We know the law and there is no right in the Constitution that we will be told we cannot enjoy. We have the right to participate in politics and give out political direction.

“So Matiang’i and Mucheru, don’t be intimidated by anyone,” he stated.

On Saturday, October 30, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, through its leadership wrote to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman, Wafula Chebukati, demanding that he warns CSs against campaigning for presidential aspirants.

The letter authored by UDA Secretary General, Veronica Maina, indicated that the Supreme Court, in the 2017 presidential election petition, held that elections are not an event, but a process beginning with the preparation to the declaration of results and CSs should not be part of that process.

Maina stated that when CSs openly declare their support for Raila Odinga, it is interference with the electoral process and called for the resignation of Interior and Coordination of National Government, Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang’i and ICT Cabinet Secretary, Joe Mucheru.

Further, Maina complained that the two CSs have been included in a multi-agency team planning for a free, fair and transparent General Election, yet the Constitution only allows the IEBC to oversee and conduct elections. She accused the two CSs of being intruders.
